Slits Shellshag Tour to Texas
Shellshag and The Slits toured from NY to
the South by Southwest music festival
in Austin, Texas this March

We had an excellent SXSW showcase at
Alyssium, Wednesday March 12th,
where starcleaner bands and friends played
along with The Slits and The Dicks!!

We played great shows on our way down with
Future Virgins and This Bike is a Pipe Bomb,
who joined us in Austin where we met up
with Tulsa, Songs for Moms,
The Reaction and Kreamy Lectric Santa
who toured to Texas from the west
coast for the SXSW showcase. The following
day, we increased our numbers joining with
great bands from all over the world to play
the Big Starcleaner Texas Party!
Monotonix, The Pharmacy, Wildildlife,
The Carnys, Party Garbage, Gorch Fock,
50 million, Mary Anns, Vena Cava, and so many
more all played our 26 band extravaganza!!
These two days of great shows were worth
traveling for, but on top of that, there
were two more days worth of shows at this
Texas hodown. Thousands of bands, parties
and shows were in Austin for these four days,
like the fuck by fuck you party at Typewriter
Museum. After four killer days in Texas,
we toured our way back to NY playing with
some great bands like Old Time Religion
and Unatural Helpers along the way.
We ended with a touch of class playing
the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburg,
before ending in Brooklyn and Jersey
City with Stupid Party, Bad Blood,
Dead Dog, Hunchback, and
Screaming Females.

The Slits

Started in 1977, the Slits became one of the
most influential all-women bands to emerge
in London. The original members were singer
Ari Up, bass player Tessa Pollit, drummer
Palmolive, and guitarist Viv Albertine.
The Slits embraced reggae and used dub
rhythms behind confrontational lyrics.
Mark P recalls seeing the Slits' first
gig, when they opened for The Clash in March.
"I've got to admit they scared the shit out
of me...Ari Up danced around screaming
the lyrics like a wailing banshee..
they were dangerous and their presence
threatened those that considered rock
to be a male-only pursuit. To me their
existence was liberating: part of
punk's attempt to push down barriers
and change the rules."

The pioneering Slits refused to compromise
their vision or sweeten their sound, and
their U.S. tours encouraged more young women
to pick up guitars and plug in.
"When some girls would be playing Barbie,
we would dress up like the Slits."
-Kate Schellenbach of Luscious Jackson

(words and pics from PUNK 365
Holly George-Warren)

The Slits with Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols at
Jonesys Jukebox Indie 103.1 FM in Los Angeles

The Slits remain uncompromising to this day,
returning in 2006 with their pioneering dub
rhythms and punk reggae. They are back again in
2008 touring their way to the SXSW festival
in Austin Texas. Ari Up, Tessa Pollitt, with
drummer Anna Schulte, guitarist Michelle Hill,
and Hollie Cooke on Keys.
They are back with a vengence infecting
us all once again with the sounds of
THE SLITS!!!!

CMJ 2006 SHELLSHAG REVIEW
Wed Nov. 1st CMJ, NYC @ Knitting Factory
"As soon as we saw the 6-foot tall male
singer in girl jeans, a skintight tank
top (with a fake dress shirt collar and
zebra-striped tie painted on it) and a
cropped gold lame sweater holding a
star-shaped guitar, we naturally thought
"joke band." But then we heard the
tribal, Melvins-ish sludge-metal sound
he made with the girl drummer (wearing
bells on her ankles and around her
waist). Tribal metal sleigh-bell grunge
is the next big thing, and guys wearing
girl jeans with tank tops is the next
big fashion statement."

Ghst on the Subway

Jen Shag has been working on a documentary
movie about experienced NY subway musician
Ghsts n Guitars. He is not just another platform
performer, nor is he a traditional busker.
Ghst is a one of a kind artist who performs
all original material written and performed
regularly on speeding subway cars, primarily
in NY, but also all over the world.
You can see the trailer for this yet to be
completed masterpiece about Ghsts' artistic
style: just click the pic

Gary Null

You know how Jen is always raving about
"the green stuff" on tour? Well, this is
the dude that turned her on to it,
Gary Null. Check him out:click pic

Automatons
Last year Shellshag took small acting parts in a
low budget killer robot movie. Well the movie is
out, and we went with starcleaner web designer
Dawa Riley to the premiere in Manhattan and we
were stunned at how good it was. Apparently we

did not research very well, and as it turns out,
movie maker and director James McKenney is a
respected and experienced film maker, and the
movie featured horror icon and Phantasm legend
Angus Scrimm! The audio, sound effects and
soundtrack were performed by The Noisettes
featuring Brian Horst. The Noisettes are the
band that is on the reverse side of the very
1st 50 million release, a split 7" from 95'.
The Noisettes were compiled and arranged
for the movie by Noah Defillips, Captain
Norlon of 50 million. The robot animation
was done by artist, DJ, and good friend
Larry Love. We are proud to have been a
part of this film, and encourage all of
you to see it.
"Automatons is what happens when Eraserhead and Tetsuo the Iron
Man bong themselves into oblivion and collaberate on a
minimalist avant-garde sci-fi cheapie shot in a toolshed...
Robot radness achieved! Budgets are for bitches."
Nathan Lee, VILLAGE VOICE

Shellshag DMBQ Panache Japan Tour

Yes,its old news, but we are still bragging
about our killer trip to Japan. Our friend and
booker Michelle Cable and her Panache zine, plus
friend, videographer and writer Jeff Shagawat
came along and we had a great time. We played
with the incredible DMBQ every night, as well as
great bands Afrirampo, King Brothers,
and Massonna.

Shellshag GTR LKR West Coast Tour
Last years January tour with GTR LKR, featuring
Bill Badgley from Federation X was one of the
most fun tours ever. Killer roadie and riot girl
Amy Blah joined us for a leg, as did photo-
grapher and videographer Jeff Shagawat
.
We played with great bands, Thrones, Green
Milk, Tulsa, Experimental Dental School,
Boyscout and Killer Dreamer.

Shellshag West Coast Tour
We returned
for another round of shows on the west coast
in September of 06', and played with the
Hunches, Brainhole, Trucks, and the Fleshies.
To cap off the end of our 2006 touring
we played one of our favorite events, the
Clarion Alley Block Party in SF. The all
day art and music event supporting murals
and public art in Frisco offers a chance
for the art community to come together.
We performed with and played along side of
great bands 50 million, Kung Fu USA, the
Rabbles, Songs for Moms, Tulsa,
and The Reaction. The pics from this
tour will be posted eventually.
