SHELLSHAG

Biography
Theres only two people in Shellshag. Shell and Shag. Shell plays guitar and sings while Shag plays drums standing up and also sings. She has bells sewn on her belt and ankles, so there's lots of frantic wiggling to coax the noise out of them. They both sing into a mic stand they built themselves that's shaped like a Y, so they face each other while they play. They're known for putting on shows that bring the house down, sometimes literally. You can always expect some crowd surfing, things being thrown accross the room, and the singing along that sometimes threatens to drown them out. The end of their show usually results in the two of them either building a sculpture out of their instruments, amps, and themselves, or completeley smashing Shag's drums. Shellshag's approach to art and music far exceeds the edge of the stage and the walls of the club, and as a very active entity within the American music scene, Shellshag on stage and Shellshag off stage are one in the same. Shellshag's intentions are not to sell an illusion, but rather to interact directly with the world of music while remaining true to themselves and the creative lifestyle they have built over 15 years of D.I.Y. recording and performing.-Johnny Nopants

LIVE SHOW REVIEWS
Pitchfork CMJ OCT 2008 Review
The Lower East Side is currently plastered with advertisements for "Daylight", the new Matt and Kim song sponsored by Mountain Dew. Matt and Kim are a fine band-- lots of spunk and hooks-- but it really makes me wonder: Why them? Why did they break out, rather than any number of other similar bands sprouting from the same DIY scene? Why not, say, Shellshag, who are basically Matt and Kim, just a little bit older? Guy guitarist and girl drummer who play facing each other, sugary pop-punk tunes spit out on ramshackle equipment, sparkplug energy. The drummer wore sleigh bells on a belt around her waist; at one point, she created a song's rhythm merely by jumping up and down. Shellshag started their set with a chant of "Fuck society! Fuck sobriety!" and ended with a cover of Liz Phair's "Fuck and Run".

Maximum Rock n Roll Interview
by Johnny Nopants- 2008

CMJ 2006
Wed Nov 1st CMJ, NYC @ Knitting Factory
"As soon as we saw the 6-foot
tall male singer in girl jeans,
a skintight tank top (with a
fake dress shirt collar and
zebra-striped tie painted on
it) and a cropped gold lame
sweater holding a star-shaped
guitar, we naturally thought,
"joke band." But then we heard
the tribal, Melvins-ish
sludge-metal sound he made
with the girl drummer (wearing
bells on her ankles and around
her waist). Tribal metal
sleigh-bell grunge is the
next big thing, and guys
wearing girl jeans with
tank tops is the next
big fashion statement."

The Portland Mercury 2006
SHELLSHAG, FEDERATION X, BRAINHOLE
(FOOD HOLE, 20 NW 3RD)

Combing the convention-less riffage
of guitarist Shellhead, heavy on th
hooks and repitition, and the energy
of standing drummer Jennifer Shagawat,
known for noise-makers and body percussion
of the wildest sort (not to mention never
sitting down), Shellshag has created a
niche all their own-offering up sex
appeal, sweat, and destruction as
crucial elements of their explosions
on stage. Shellshag is what would
happen if the Who, Phillip Roebuck,
and MacGyver were trapped together
after a horrible plane crash, resorted
to cannibalism, and only two survived.
It'd be messy, and ugly to watch, but
fun to listen to, and entertaining
as hell-just like Shellshag.

"The White Stripes on Steroids and Crack"

Shellshag, Demander, Chinese Stars
Lit Lounge CMJ 2005

The noise rock fury of Shellshag was a
timewarp back to Providence, RI, c.
2000, when bands like Lightning Bolt
tore up semi-converted mill spaces
like Fort Thunder, back to an age
when people were loud and beer
routinely flew through the air with
reckless abandon (sometimes
accompanied by full drum kits).
Made up of guitarist Shell
(who rocks a polka dot Fender)
and drummer Shag (who is
a human piece of percussion --
she wears a belt made of bells
and tambourine detritus),
Shellshag harkened back to
this precious era and dominated
the tiny stage at Lit. Shag
bounced from foot to foot as
she pounded on her drum kit and
jangled her percussion-laden
midriff. Shell was equally
animated, as he jumped up and
down while singing and playing
heartily. At the end of
their set, Shag hurled her drums
against the back wall of
the club, while Shell took it
upon himself to tackle the
hepped up Shag after propping
his guitar against an amp for
premium feedback. Finally, Shell
threw Shag over his shoulder
and ran out of the room, feedback
still resounding. The audience was --
in a word shell-shocked. The
thinned-out crowd just stood
there with mouths agape.

Destroy Me I'm Yours Record Reviews
NY NightTrain 2007 -shellshag destroy me i'm yours:
Globetrotting, singing punk love songs face to face through a homemade crossed v-shaped mic stand, the drum and guitar duo of Jen and Johnny of Shellshag have managed to figure out a way to locate what, at least on the surface, appears to be the ultimate indie rock couple lifestyle. Perpetually on tour, releasing their friends' records, putting on shows, and in general, making art and helping folks out, the duo approaches music and life with the kind of elation, unpretentious soul, and D.I.Y. brotherhood that you just don't see all that often anymoreÉ if you ever really did. And they've been at it across the American underground forever. I initially got to know Jen and Johnny in the late-1990s when they put on a show for one of my bands at their Starcleaners warehouse in San Francisco - a cavernous building was formerly the Residents' home base. Important players in the post-Hickey Mission sludge scene, they packed the place with hundreds of folks for a bill that also included Johnny's band, 50 Million, and Jen's band, Static Faction. Not only will I never forget how their efforts saved our asses financially, but the show was every bit as wild and amazing as the next few days sleepless in the San Francisco. Fast-forward a decade and, not only have Jen and Johnny not let up one iota, but, since joining forces in rock, they're at it stronger and harder than ever. While no recording can accurately translate their live fervor, street theatrics, and visual spectacle, their first full-length, Destroy Me I'm Yours, not only captures Johnny's fuzzed out guitar and Jen's stand up drums, but also their authentic mix of gutter punk dirt and syrupy charm. The casual bliss of "Bridge" and the show-stopping hit ballad "Gary's Note" are my personal favorite Jen songs. As for Johnny, I'm particularly fond of the harmony-vocal slow dance of "Right and Wrong," the bloody lo-fi valentine of "Happiness," the poppy punk of "Little Birdy," and the rough Stoogesy "Bill Badgley, Please Don't Let Me Fade Away." Destroy Me I'm Yours concludes with two of their finest and least traditional numbers: "Zero Girl" is pure ear-splitting ambient metal machine music. And the band's stick-throwing finale, "123," could easily tell you how to get to a Sesame Street address. There are in fact enough bona-fide pop hits in this infectious collection (see "Kiss Me Harder" and "Gary's Note") that I'm convinced these two could afford to leisurely ramble in their own RV if they wrote for Kelly Clarkson. Finally, the ideal soundtrack for a punk prom. Did I mention they give you a free CD comes with the go'jhas gatefold vinyl package?

RAZORCAKE 2007
You know what's great sometimes
about DIY punk rock? For all the
petty shit that can go down, it
can be an open door which interesting,
inventive bands are invited to play,
even though they may not fit in a
recognizable pattern. Shellshag's
a perfect example of that, as they
remind me simultaneously of bands as
far flung as Bongwater to the Pixies,
from labels like Amprep to Merge,
but it ultimately sounds like
a big bang hasexploded in these two
folks' heads and they've done a great
job of worm-holing that unique
universe down on vinyl. And they
are welcome to play backyards
and basements, down with strumming
This Bike is a Pipe Bomb tunes
when equipment malfunctions,
and putting out a records thats as
challenging and ethereal as it is
melodic, snappy-crunchy and fiesty.
For those of you who don't mind
some mental stretching, via the
Naked Cult of Hickey, to Fleshies,
to Guided by Voices, to made up
lullibyes, and who also want a rump
shaking payoff for all of that
expirementing, look no further.
